Teaching Overview

Swansea University Medical School adopts an integrated, spiral curriculum, using case-based lectures and skills sessions to support learning.

Throughout the course, you’ll gain the following clinical experience:

Phase 1 (Year 1 & 2)

  • Community-Based Learning (CBL) in General Practice for one day every fourth or fifth week
  • Early Apprenticeships

Phase 2 (Year 3 & 4)

  • Clinical Apprenticeships and Assistantships (Medicine, Surgery and Primary Care) including 8 weeks in CBL
  • Eight five-week speciality attachments (Acute Surgery,  Women’s Health, Child Health, Mental Health, Sub-Specialities of Medicine and Surgery, and Frailty) at Singleton, Morriston and Prince Phillip Hospitals.
  • Five-week Senior Assistantship / shadowing period to prepare you for F1.

Extracurricular / Additional Opportunities

Welsh speaking students can study an optional ‘Doctor as Professional’ unit each year. The unit may also mean you’ll be eligible for internal scholarships or financial support through Coleg Cymraeg.

For students who don’t speak Welsh, there are optional ‘Welsh for Medicine’ courses, which will support you to develop basic Welsh language skills, particularly aimed towards working in healthcare settings.

Within your final year, you’ll undertake a five-week elective, in the form of a clinical placement of your choice, which can be taken overseas.

Interview Information

Swansea University Medical School uses an ‘Assessment Centre’ format for its interviews. For 2023 entry, this will include:

  1. A thirty-minute written situational judgement assessment, designed to assess your decision making skills, which are required for medical school.
  2. Two separate twenty-minute interviews discussing your personal statement.

The interview is designed to assess skills and qualities required for medical school, including:

  • Communication skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Coping with pressure
  • Insight and integrity
  • Passion for medicine / resilience to succeed
