Teaching Overview

The University of Buckingham Medical School separates its four and half year course into two phases: phase 1 refers to the first two years and phase 2 is the remainder of the course.

Phase 1:

  • The curriculum is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group work, self study and clinical work.
  • You will have opportunities for clinical experience in General Practice and hospital.

Phase 2:

  • You will develop practical skills initially in simulated environments, then within clinical settings.
  • You’ll complete twelve clinical blocks, both within hospital and community settings.

Teaching Hospitals / Clinical Partnerships

Buckingham Medical School's partner hospitals include:

  • Milton Keynes University Hospital
  • St Andrews Hospital in Northampton
  • South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust
  • Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Extracurricular / Additional Opportunities

During the fourth and fifth term, you’ll undertake Student Selected Components (SSC), which provide choice within the curriculum and opportunities to explore areas of interest.

You will also undertake an elective programme and student assistantship towards the end of your course.

Selling Points

Launched in January 2015, the University of Buckingham Medical School is the first independent, not-for-profit Medical School in the UK.

The ratio of students to clinical teachers and patients is low to allow students the 'best chance to interact with a wide variety of patients and doctors'.

Interview Information

The selection process for Buckingham Medical School is made up of three stages:

  • Stage One: Academic selection – this is your application form
  • Stage Two: Multiple Mini Examinations – this is a computer-based test which assesses your ‘analysis, interpretation and judgement abilities’ related to the General Medical Council’s Good medical practice
  • Stage Three: Objective Structured Selection Examinations (OSSE) – this includes a series of tasks which assess your personal attributes relating to the General Medical Council’s Good medical practice and your suitability for medicine

You can find more information about the selection process for 2023 entry on their website here.

Admissions Exam

Most UK medical schools require you to pass an admissions exam before you’ll be invited for interview. However, Buckingham is one of the few that don’t!
